Jendella Benson Might sound harsh, but you either are a writer or you're not. There is no such thing as an 'aspiring' writer unless you're talking about toddlers learning how to hold pencils and write their names. Everyone else: if you write, you're a writer. No one has to give you permission. The act of doing it is your qualification. So go forth and do what you're qualified to do. :)
Jendella Benson It's actually a story idea that I've had for a while, way before I wrote Hope & Glory. It was inspired by long conversations with a friend about our experiences as Black teenage girls and the academic research she was doing on teenage girls. It was gestating within me for all this time. I think I needed to be ready emotionally (and skills-wise) to tackle the story in the right way.
