Stargazing is not in any way my own story but I was interested in the idea of a long marriage breaking up and the effect that might have on the adult children of the couple. My own parents divorced when I was in my early twenties, I was old enough to feel their pain and rage and I tried desperately to get them back together again just as Seren tries to do in the novel. I failed to reunite them at the time but twenty five years later they remarried - long after I had given up trying!

Often it will be a snippet of a report I hear on Women's Hour or something I read online or in a magazine. A tiny seed of a story which, with the addition of a little imagination, starts to grow.

Never give up! Keep going every day. Even if you only write one sentence it's better than no sentence at all! Don't imagine that you have to write a thousand words a day sitting at your desk for hours. Twenty words written while you stir the baked beans for your tea is still progress in the right direction.

I'm working on a novel set in the Dordogne. Inspired by a beautiful converted monastery my family and I have stayed in many times, it tells the story of a reclusive ex-pop star whose financial troubles lead her to rent out her French home to holiday-makers for the summer. Forced into the role of host to the recalcitrant guests she struggles to accommodate their needs but begins to finally face up to her painful past. It is a love story but also a homage to women of a certain age who are never too old to start again!

I take a break from writing - watch a good film, read a book, go for a long walk with my dog Sunny. I also read personal story features in magazines to get ideas on character and plot lines and listen to Radio 4 -Woman's Hour is a mine of story ideas! Wine always helps too! ... and chocolate!

The best thing about being a writer is being able to escape from reality into a fantasy land. When I was a child I loved playing with my dolls house, creating exciting scenarios, dramatic situations and tumultuous relationships for the tiny dolls who lived in it. My novels are just a continuation of playing with my dolls house except instead of doing it alone, within the confines of my bedroom, now I can share the stories in the pages of my books. The stories seem to bubble up from my subconscious and the characters develop personalities and take shape until they are almost real people to me. It’s like having an extra life running parallel with my own!
