My great-grandmother's story. Before my mother died, she and her cousin began delving into our family's genealogy. They got as far as discovering that my great-grandmother's maiden name was the same as my grandmother's maiden name (likely meaning that my grandmother was illegitimate - a scandal in those days). We also know that my great-grandmother was married twice, giving my grandmother two step-fathers (whom she always just referred to by their surnames, with a touch of contempt). My mother then told me they decided to drop the investigation as my grandmother's life had been "too sad". I never got the chance to ask for more details.
