Tom Turner The idea for "Sign of the Sandman" came to me while looking for a gift for my one-year-old niece (who is now a junior in college!) Always pay attention… you never know where or when an idea will land.
Tom Turner I once heard someone say, “Writers write. Inspiration’s for amateurs.” Which I think is just a curt way of saying, “Sit down in the chair and put words to page.” In other words, don’t wait for inspiration. Sit down and write and let the words inspire you—not the other way around. That all being said, great works of art can inspire me, as well as great acts of selflessness and courage.
Tom Turner I am currently working on fleshing out book two of "Sign of the Sandman" as well as the movie adaptation for book one. I also have a few other ideas I’m noodling around with—for film, TV, and books.
Tom Turner Write because you love it. Write as much as you can. And when you’re not writing, read as much as you can. Pay attention to life and the things happening all around you. Go see movies, and plays, and great works of art. Write about what excites you. And remember the writer’s paradox: the more personal it is to you, the more universal appeal it will have. And most importantly… don’t focus on success. Focus on the work. If you do great work, success will sort itself out.
Tom Turner The best thing about being a writer, for me, is simply being able to do what I love, which is create stories and have others enjoy them.
Tom Turner A lot of the time writer’s block stems from not knowing the intent of a scene. So take great care in knowing your story, your characters, and what it is you’re trying to accomplish. And in the event writer’s block does rear its ugly head and you feel stuck, sometimes the best thing to do is just step away from the keyboard and come back later. I, for one, like to get my heart rate up—go for a walk, a run, or a bike ride!
