David Beaupre The best thing about being a writer is typing “The End”. Writing is a very emotionally taxing experience. Sometimes a writer can lose his or her way very easily. So it is most satisfying when you can say that you are done, you are happy with your literary expression and you can move on.
David Beaupre I think that the only advice that any successful writer can give to an aspiring writer is to practice your craft every day. Set a goal for each day, even if it is just a few lines. It won’t be long before you will discover your ‘voice’ as a writer. When you become comfortable with writing you then have the difficult job of looking deeply into your experiences for the story that is yours. It takes a modicum of skill and a great deal of tenacity.
David Beaupre Right now I am working on the second book of my Quest series. ‘Quest to the Caribbean’ will pick up where my wife and I left off in Georgetown, Bahamas with our sailboat Quest and tell the adventure of sailing the ‘thorny path’ to Puerto Rico, then down the chain of the Lesser Antilles all the way to Trinidad.
David Beaupre Most of my inspiration, whether I am writing newspaper columns, fiction or non fiction comes from real life. I think that there is a writer in most people. It is a big commitment to finishing a long work such as a book. Making this commitment is usually the first obstacle that most new writers will need to overcome.
David Beaupre The idea for the book actually originated with our friend Marlene Wallace. ‘Quest and Crew’ is a memoir. Marlene asked me what it was like to survive a Category 5 hurricane while my wife and I were on our sailboat Quest. She liked the story so much that she passed it onto a friend who then passed it to a magazine publisher who approached me about running a series of feature articles which eventually was expanded into the book.
