That's a great question! One reason I write mysteries is for the thrill of solving crimes and getting my protagonist into and out of frightening situations while simply sitting at the keyboard of my computer. This allows me to be very (vicariously) brave!
I do have a family mystery that I may write about some day: Family lore is that my paternal grandfather escaped from a prison in Siberia during the Bolshevik revolution by "killing a Cossack and stealing his horse." Imagine the story around that! He would never elaborate.
