I have an idea for a short story that I'm still developing. It's a bit longer than the others, and it's also ambitious, so I'm taking it slow. Ultimately, I'd like to write a few more short stories before publishing my collection.
Eventually, I'll devote time to several unfinished longer works, but I most enjoy creating new characters and story lines. Meanwhile, I'm wearing a marketing hat for 'Homeland.'

My experience is more about the emotional connection I feel with a topic. The first draft is usually not a problem for me unless I run into a structural issue where I might feel that something's missing in a story, for example. In this case, I tend to deconstruct and analyze the story until I find the balance that I'm hoping to achieve. Mostly, I struggle with motivation to edit and rewrite after the first draft is written. Ultimately, maintaining my level of interest in my story or my topic is my best defense.

By having something to say. For fiction, distinguishable characters with a basic story line inspire me. They react as only they can -- and I let them. For non-fiction, it helps to begin with a deep understanding of a subject, along with some level of credibility, but also a desire to explore what I may not know from the start. Writing is a great teacher.

My advice is to write. Start a daily journal. Get into a regular habit of letting your words out.
