I've been writing "dispatches" to family and friends for years from different war zones (Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, and elsewhere), about the things I've seen, the stories I've heard, and experiences I've lived. The feedback I got was wonderful and gratifying, and I gradually realized those dispatches could form the starting point for a book. That's how it began.

I've always loved writing. As an academic psychologist, I've written research articles and book chapters for years, but am most passionate about creative writing. "War Torn: Stories of Courage, Love, and Resilience" was a joy to write because it allowed me to return to writing creatively about a topic I'm deeply passionate about: the ways in which people are affected by war, and reassemble their lives in its aftermath.

Write about whatever you're passionate about, and what you can speak to with authenticity. I also think it's a good idea to have a clear sense of who your intended audience is. Once your draft is done, unless you already have a publisher with a good editor, invest in a great editor, someone who will be lovingly honest with you and help you refine your manuscript.

I find writing joyful, sometimes therapeutic, and deeply engaging. Time passes without my having any awareness of it. I become wholly immersed in the present moment. And then there's the wonderful experience of sharing one's writing with others, having discussions about it, the connections it creates and deepens.

If I'm feeling blocked, I usually back off and take a break--a few hours or a day. I find forcing the writing seldom yields good results.
