Bethanie Hestermann The sweet spot for Zoology for Kids in terms of target age range is probably 11-14. However, science and/or animal-enthused 9-10-year-olds will also enjoy the book, especially if they have guidance in reading and performing the activities. Our suggestion for readers on the younger side of the spectrum is to take the book in small chunks, enjoy the funny stories and colorful photos, and work with an older sibling or an adult to maximize learning during activities. Chapters 1-3 contain the most dense science material, so this section may present a good opportunity for parents to step in and help, depending on the child.

On the older end of the age spectrum, pre-teens and teens will find particular value in the real-life zoologist profiles and career-advice sections throughout Part 2. Older readers can use the book as a career guide, a supplement to science classes, and a springboard for designing more advanced science projects.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Zoology for Kids has depth and therefore, it’s a book kids can grow into! It may serve a different purpose for a 9-year-old than it does for a 14-year-old, but there’s value among its pages for animal lovers of ALL ages.
