Emily Thornton Calvo Currently, I'm working on promoting my book, "Lending Color to the Otherwise Absurd." It's a long overdue first volume of my poems and paintings. I'm very proud of it. It follows my recovery from breast cancer and leukemia that I've dealt with over the past few years and marks a new commitment to moving forward with writing that comes from within and not from a client. (Knock on wood.) If you'd like to read more about my odyssey, check out http://emilyshead.wordpress.com/.
Emily Thornton Calvo Read the classics. Read what's popular. Read what's recognized. Then forget all that and write from that holy place inside yourself. This is advice I constantly have to veer back to even after 30 years.
Emily Thornton Calvo Being a writer means your brain gets filled with all kinds of information that makes other people think you're really smart. I've written about healthcare, so I know the difference between an angiogram and an angioplasty. I've written about printing so I know about all sorts of post office regs. Relationships. Marketing. Business. I know just enough to be dangerous.

There's also the variety. It's not boring--unless you're sitting at your desk trying to rework a line for the 93rd time.
Emily Thornton Calvo If I'm stuck for output, I figure I need more input. Maybe there's a piece of info I need to continue writing. Maybe I need to go to a museum, see a movie or take a walk somewhere new. It usually doesn't last long.
