Katheryn J. Avila I do have a sequel planned, and a very rough first draft of it. Unfortunately writing isn't my full time job so I can't pump it out as fast as I'd like. For reference, Reckoning took me the better part of a decade to get complete. I'm hoping it won't take that long to get its sequel out. Thanks for the question! It gives me renewed drive to know that people still think about Reckoning :)
Katheryn J. Avila I intend to finish Ready Player One, but don't have any other specific books in mind.
Katheryn J. Avila Marketing lessons, not very many simply because I didn't do a ton of marketing around it. So I guess you could say I learned that, if I'm going to self-pub, I'll need to allocate tons of time (and money) to marketing. It wasn't really a big concern for me when I first started - I just wanted to get my book out there. As for writing lessons, everything I know, I've learned from Reckoning :) It developed with me as a writer, and I've learned everything from how to properly construct tension in a scene to using brevity for better impact. Really everything. Working on the sequel, the one thing that's changed is that I'm not in a rush to get it out there anymore. I'm taking my time a little better, and pacing myself rather than going all in like I did with Reckoning. Patience with myself and the process - that's what's changed.
Katheryn J. Avila Very carefully lol. It's tough because I'm naturally lazy, so it's easy to lose track of both when I'm feeling overwhelmed. Work is pretty flexible, and I don't have the commute, so sometimes I write early in the morning before I start work and sometimes I'll just transition into writing immediately after my work hours are done. Or I'll give myself a long break between work and writing and not look at a laptop again until well into the night.
Katheryn J. Avila That's a really hard one! There's so many. If I had to pick one, though, it'd be Jackaby, of the Jackaby series. He's a Sherlock-type character with a supernatural twist, but other than that he's a supremely well-written, compassionate, and tragic individual. That entire series consists of lovable characters.
Katheryn J. Avila My ideal writing environment is basically anywhere I can settle with my laptop. I usually have headphones handy so I can block out distractions. Some kind of drink nearby, too. But really I can write almost anywhere if the mood strikes and I have my notebook or laptop on me. Funny enough, though, I prefer to write where people can see me and snap me out of my own distractions - my boyfriend does this a lot to keep me on track!
Katheryn J. Avila How I drink my coffee depends on my mood. Once in a while I'll drink it black with some sugar, but usually I drink it with lots of milk and lots of sugar. Never decaf, either. And my preferred tea is Chamomile.
Katheryn J. Avila That's a hard one - I love all of them, but my favorite will always be Lexia. We kind of grew up together.
Katheryn J. Avila The old book cover was done in a rush and is the result of my complete impatience to get Reckoning out into the world :). And I knew, if I wanted Reckoning to be successful, I would need a much much MUCH better book cover. Being in the self-pub world, even for such a short while, gave me the tools I needed to find a good book design, and in my travels I eventually stumbled upon Deranged Doctor Design. And damn did they not disappoint!
Katheryn J. Avila I'm working on an untitled sequel to Reckoning - that's all I'll say about that...
Katheryn J. Avila Write every chance you get! And make friends with other writers!
Katheryn J. Avila Being able to share the stories in my head with the rest of the world.
Katheryn J. Avila I force myself to write, or I look for prompts. The only way to get over writer's block is to actually write.
