Thankyou, I'm so glad you liked these two books. Yes, I'm currently writing the third, and wish it wasn't taking me quite so long...best, Pat

(view spoiler)[I've just finished and enjoyed The Midwife's Daughter, but am a bit confused over where the 10 shillings a week postal order came from, who is the benefactor? Will that be revealed in another book? (hide spoiler)]

it was Bea all the time - by the time of their engagement both Joe and Grace suspect this (see p 331) but realise that it's the last thing Violet would actually want to know. So they don't tell her.
There's another book, Aren't We Sisters? that for me is Part Two of The Midwife's Daughter. I hope you'll enjoy that one too. best wishes, Pat Ferguson

Hallo, Kimberly. I love the sort of historical novels that feel authentic without making me aware that the author's done lots of research. Like Hilary Mantel's books about Cromwell, for example. I also love Maria McCann's work - have you tried As Meat Loves Salt? or Ace, King, Knave? None of these books has any sort of rosy view about what the past was like. The Old Wives' Tale by Arnold Bennet is another of my favourites. Best wishes, Pat

Making up people you can understand. Being them, a little.

Ideas come from writing, not the other way round, or so I've found. You just have to make yourself sit there until you've written something - anything. See where your fingers take you

It's a little too soon to tell. I start out making some people up, and then see what happens to them. So I never know how a story's going to end when I begin. Sometimes a character fits nicely into a plot I've had in mind a long time. But more often they seem to want to do something else instead, so I must find out what that is, and work out why they want to do it.

Aren't We Sisters? is in some ways the next part of my last book, The Midwife's Daughter, with several of the same characters, but set about fourteen years later. Originally I'd hoped to fit all the stories into one huge jigsaw puzzle of a novel, but realised eventually that swopping between so many characters and dates would make everything too hard to read. AWS stands alone, but I think you may enjoy it more if you've also read The Midwife's Daughter.
