Anne Higa Lots of different things. I'm almost always juggling several short stories/novels as well as non-fiction/business writing.
Anne Higa I love working with the written word, allowing imagination to run wild. I love it when people read something I've read and take it to mean something (good!) that I never thought of. That - to me - is the benefit of the written word as an art form.
Anne Higa 1) Reading (a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction, but especially in genres that interest me)
2) More reading
3) Occasionally: movies/prayer/conversation/meditation
4) Mostly reading (did I mention that yet?)
Anne Higa Which one? Cold Iron is something I wrote for fun - seriously, I sat down one day and wanted to write some quick for fun. Upon sharing it with my usual writer support group, I was told it was some of the best stuff I'd written yet. So I decided to see where the story went. It is partly inspired by Mercedes Lackey and of course Celtic and Norse mythology (though the latter shows up more in the second book...)
Anne Higa Pick-axe and shovel. No, seriously, I don't entirely believe in writer's block. Sometimes we all need breaks, but if I really want to I will write something down - and it might even be great. Even if it's not, it may lead somewhere great. So I suppose that the honest answer is: I write through it. Okay, so the totally honest answer is if it gets really bad I usually take that to mean I need a break - and I take it. Then, come back.
