Peter Monn Mostly, I come up with ideas while I'm driving around. I'll pull into a gas station and write out notes for an idea that I have that I think would make a great story almost seeing like a movie in my head. Currently in my phone I have about 20 different ideas for books, so the difficulty come in figuring out which book I'm going to write next!
Peter Monn I have worked with teenagers with drug problems for years and I wanted to write a book about what happens after they come home from a drug treatment program. I was also watching It's a Wonderful Life and I was struck by the question of how much we really do affect other people's lives so I wanted to write a book about how meeting one person can drastically change your life.
Peter Monn Hmmmm...music is probably the easiest way for me to get inspired. I am also a voracious liar so telling stories comes easy to me.
Peter Monn It's a secret but it has orchids, teenagers, bonfires, police stations, drug treatment centers, true love, aliens and abandoned houses. Its a runaway love story between two best friends.
Peter Monn Read a lot and write every day. It doesn't matter what you're writing just that you're writing. I'm not a very disciplined writer and I wish that I were better but all of my books are written within 3-4 weeks. Once I'm inside of a story I can't get out. I also read all of the time, especially books in my genre because it challenges me and makes me feel like part of something bigger.
Peter Monn The best thing about being a writers is the ability to create worlds that never existed before. It's also been my dream all of my life to be a "working writer" and to finally be able to live that dream is unreal. It is also super cool when readers find meanings in my books that I hadn't intended. To affect someone in a strong way is powerful.
Peter Monn Since I was a small child I've always lived in an imaginary world. When I'm writing, the characters come alive in my mind and actually become friends and people I feel that I know. If I'm suffering from writer's block, I try to have imaginary conversations with the characters or ask them where they would go or what should happen next. Often though, I find that writer's block is when I know I should be taking the book in a certain direction or write about a sensitive topic but I'm afraid of how the reader might respond. I'm trying to be true to the story and tell it as honestly as possible. Also, a good drive around late at night always cures my writer's block!
