Without a doubt, the hours! My favorite time to write, when I am most creative, tends to be from 11pm until around 4am... and there are not a lot of careers that can accommodate that. For me, writing occupies far more time than would a 40 hour work week, but it's an absolute pleasure. Being able to choose the hours I work is unbelievable freedom.

Ideas of all sorts from my daily life inspire me to write. Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” was a huge influence and taught me the freedom to write any kind of world I imagine. As an adult, I aspire to the level of many of my personal inspirations including Martin Amis, Tom Robbins, Hunter S. Thompson, Ray Bradbury, and (still after more than a century) D.H. Lawrence.

To avoid at all costs wondering what anyone else might think. The greatest freedom is to start by writing stream of consciousness, with no end goal or structure in mind, which usually staves off the paralysis that can come with thinking your writing has to be exceptional or important from start to finish.

I have just completed a treatment for the screenplay of "Perverse Wonderland," and my current project is a graphic novel that is both a sequel as well as an adventure story that can stand on its own. In the noir tradition of Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe meets Ian Fleming’s James Bond, the graphic novel continues the British/American love affair in a more fantastical way.

I tend to read favorite books of mine during times of writer's block. If I can be inspired by solid story-telling, I usually force myself to return to my writing more determined than ever.
