I don't consider it an option. Writing for me is as familiar as breathing. I don't think I could stop if I wanted to. So I suppose the best thing about it is when I get paid for doing it--not that I would stop if I didn't!

From 1989 to 1995, I followed the Grateful Dead around the country. This was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and one that is hard to explain to those who weren't a part of it. I wanted to share that story, both with those who understand and with those who don't. While I went home after every tour cycle, I met many people who didn't, who continued their nomadic journey around the country year-round. These people intrigued me, and _Free_ is the fictional story of one such person.

Many people have asked me about a sequel to my first novel, _Free_. While I don't want to write a sequel per se, I've decided to write a second novel and incorporate some of the main characters. This will answer my readers' questions, but still keep the story fresh for me. Currently I'm exploring using many different voices within the same novel, sort of like Barbara Kingsolver's _The Poisonwood Bible_, which is really fun!

I am inspired by everything I perceive and everyone I meet. All of my characters are a mix of the people I've encountered. My writing is not autobiographical, but it is heavily influenced by the events I have witnessed.
