From reading Moby Dick. I read it whilst working in counter-terrorism for the UK Government. As well as been blown away by the ability to bring to life the alien world of the whaling ship covering the most technical to the most transcendental aspects of life on-board, I was immediately struck by the similarities of the relationships between Ahab and his crew and some of the charismatic individuals and their followers that I was working against. Many of Ahab's characteristics and manias were displayed by the men I was looking at. I was so struck by the parallels I ended up writing Invective, joining the many who have taken the great novel as a start point to explore our condition.
