I would love to time travel to the Inca Civilization and see how they built the structures with the monoliths that were transported over large distances and over large mountains. To see the people, the roads, the gold, Machu Picchu in its glory. That would be a thrill.

John, I have not read Decent Interval, so I'll look it up. Many thanks for the info. I'm happy to give my reaction once I've read it. From my experience, I wasn't overly impressed with the intelligence from the army. The CIA was informed usually. Best, Kent

Thanks for your email and I hope you will enjoy the story which is fiction. Peripheral events are true, however. All the best, Kent

The best thing about being an author is that I control my schedule and I create. Toward the advancement of the story, I have flexibility to change my idea and insert a better one. I enjoy the process, seeing how the story and ideas evolve. I get great satisfaction in viewing the gestation.

I'm against war, and so I wanted to show readers how enemies can develop friendships. I never thought about raising the stigma of Vietnam, but the idea came to me, and I couldn't resist it. I ended up trusting the process and was amazed how much I remembered from my two year army stint that happened forty years ago.

I love telling stories especially of a contrarian nature as well as reading stories. Other authors who write well and write compelling stories are my inspiration. Authors are big time readers for the most part.

I am 75% completed with a thriller titled, "The Thorium Stratagem." It's about a corrupt Secretary of Defense trying to steal the Russian scientist's' discovery of a new energy source using thorium. Presidents of both Russian and America try to prevent a war between them as they deal with corruption, betrayal, and assassination attempts.

Ask the question, for whom are you writing? If it's for your own healing or information, then write and trust the words that come out. If you want to sell your writing, ask what does that people in that genre like to read and then give it to them. One way to improve your writing is to read in the genre and trust your skills.
The regimen: keep writing even when a little voice says you can't; keep reading; get feedback from someone you trust and generally not someone who is family or friend. You want incisive criticism. Know that rewriting and editing take longer than you think. And finally have fun with your effort. If you are not enjoying the process, why are you writing?

I haven't experienced writer's block. I can usually write something. After two hours if I feel tired or I'm having difficulty with the dialogue, I either walk around the block and then resume the story or just turn off the computer. On two occasions, I have put my novel aside and written a short story which sometimes takes one week. Short stories are more challenging since action, dialogue, feelings must be condensed. When I finish the short story, I get someone to read and criticize it. i can then see its flaws, and go deeper. After this effort, I return to my novel with more energy, concentration, and confidence. More ideas and nuances can more easily surface to improve my story.
