From the outset I was committed to painting a fair portrait of the city. I wasn't interested in making the city seem worse or better than I've experienced it; I didn't have an agenda in that way. I had faith that if I stuck to a balanced portrayal, I could handle whatever reception the book got, both from people I know and readers I've never met.
