As strange as this may sound, Paris...its dramatic grey sky, its reflective river, it's gardens and streets and boulevards and bridges, it's museums and cafes...Paris, itself, gave me the idea for my most recent book.

My writing process is simple: first, I contemplate what my subject is and where I am in the development of the piece...then I look through hundreds of black and white images to find the one image that mirrors the emotion I wish to evoke for the piece I am writing...then, by allowing the image to help guide my voice, and its tone, I write.
When this process goes well, in my mind, I can hear music. And this music inspires me, like a concert pianist, to touch the keys and create words and sentences that are meaningful and beautiful and honest.

Although I am in "promotion mode" for my book, Hemingway's Paris: A Writer's City In Words And Images, deep in my mind, I am already in Cuba and living in the small suburb of San Francisco de Paula. I can smell the sea in the air and feel rhythm of daily life. When I fall asleep at night, my final thoughts center on the people and on the culture that awaits me in Cuba. Hemingway's Cuba: A Writer's Island In Words And Images is my next lovely project.

My advice is to write meaningful prose...prose that deeply reflects the way you feel about your subject. When your reader feels something by reading your sentences--when they connect emotionally--you win...and you will develop an audience, then, and you will be noticed.

Writing.
Although attending signings and talks and events can be enjoyable, and are necessary, these things take time away from writing. I happen to feel much more comfortable as a writer when I am alone and exploring my subject.

Stephen King wrote in his fine book, On Writing, that, "plumbers don't get plumber's block so why should writers get writer's block." I try to keep this in mind when sitting down to write. When I do hit a wall, however, I'm happy to take a short break, drink a cold glass of water with a wedge of lemon, and return refreshed.
