As I was finishing up my debut novel I had a basic idea of what I wanted to do next. Then I worked on writing five different storylines and chose the one I felt was best.

Usually I get the impetus after someone tells me, "they can't wait for my next book." Then the creative spark is ignited.

Just start writing. Don't try to write the perfect sentence or the perfect paragraph initially. Focus your energy on the story and let your thoughts just naturally flow. Then go back and edit, edit, edit. Most importantly have fun.

I don't force myself to write and just take advantage of the extra time to do other things. This recharges my batteries and usually leads to another creative burst.
