When I'm struggling to move forward, sometimes I simply put the story aside for days. At other times, especially if I'm absolutely driven to finish up a section in order to move to one I have firm ideas about, I will keep at it and plod along until I've at least written out something acceptable; I usually find it workable to do this and then later on go back and make refinements.

Easier said than done, but the most important advice is to be proud of what you've written. The thing I realized as soon as I completed my debut novel was that it takes guts to create something and offer it up to the world. Some people may not like your story and may criticize it, but, remember, you were the one who had the courage to write it and to share it with others.

Southern Passage is based on many of the experiences I had during the summer following high school graduation in 1966. Many wonderful events, and some harrowing ones, happened on my journey to the American South while working with the railroad starting the day after graduation. Years later, when the writing bug finally and fully took hold, it was a natural result to put those experiences on paper.
