Thomas F. Clardy I consider myself to still be an aspiring writer. I do however recommend learning as much as you can about literature and grammar. I always say that to break the rules, you first need to know what the rules are. I also recommend listening to people in all sorts of situations...listen to the words and the way the words are spoken - great way to learn how to write dialogue. Be sure to write every chance possible -even if it's just jotting down ideas and snippets of dialogue. And, of course, read and read...
Thomas F. Clardy I'm currently writing short stories for a second volume of stories about the South. I'm also finishing up a short science fiction novel called "Novaterra".
Thomas F. Clardy Putting the multitude of characters in my head on paper - it frees up space for new characters to be born. (It's a never-ending saga.)
Thomas F. Clardy My story ideas come from living in the South. My stories come from stories from my youth and other observations. You've heard the saying, "Write what you know", it is so true. I know the South.
Thomas F. Clardy I just write. Even if it makes no sense, I write. It gets the creative juices flowing like exercise gets the heart pumping.
Thomas F. Clardy I read books and just talk to people. Listening is the best thing someone who writes can do. The way people talk to each other - listening to that, really listening - makes your written words come alive. i can't overemphasize listening to people and to the world around.
