Usually by hearing or seeing something that tweaks my interest and then chatting it through with friends.

I first got the basic idea many years ago when I was studying 'Human intelligence'. I've always been fascinated by the way the mind works. The setting for the book came much more recently, when London was buzzing with the distraction that was the Olympics.
The best bit of luck came when I was looking for a new industry to use as a potential scenario for the End of the World. I came across Fracking in my research and had to explain it all in the book, as no-one I spoke to had heard of it. Low and Behold, some 6 months later, it was all over twitter and facebook!
