My first book (publication pending in 2016) stemmed largely from my PhD research into the idea of the dark domestic, and the unheimlich home. I found that the research stimulated ideas that couldn't be contained within my academic work - but fiction proved the perfect place to develop these.

That's a hard one to answer. Inspiration comes from direct experience, from the stories of others, from observations, from dreams, from ...well, life itself.

I have a collection coming out on the domestic uncanny in 2016, so I'm re-reading the TOC to see if it makes sense - I'm also hoping to work with an artist I admire on the cover, which is quite exciting. I have two other collections lined up (one on travel and liminal spaces and the other on contemporary folklore), and am working at the moment on a story for one of these.

I get so little time to write, I don't usually suffer from writer's block - because I've been waiting eagerly for the chance to scribble. On the rare occasions I do, I tend to drop the story in question, and leave it to lie fallow. I've learned not to force it. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't (but more often than not, it does). At the moment I'm working on a story I let go of about a year and a half ago - I've suddenly realised how to reanimate it.
