Kathy Miner Thanks so much, Mei - I'm glad you're enjoying my books! I'm working on the third book as I type this (literally - I took a break to answer your question) and I'll release it this summer, though I don't have an exact date yet. Probably sometime in July... But only if I get back to work! :) Thanks again and happy reading!
Kathy Miner They come to me, Alyssa, usually fully formed - I don't have a lot of say in how they develop most of the time! That's how I know when the story and characters are really working - I feel like I'm just along for the ride, watching and recording the action as it happens.
Kathy Miner This has been said so many times, but it just can't be said enough: Study the craft. Learn to be a master craftsman with your tools, the most basic of which are grammar, spelling and punctuation. Errors pull your reader out of the story - you never want that to happen! Finally, read Mr. Stephen King's excellent book, "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft."
Kathy Miner The follow-up to "What Survives of Us." No idea now many books will be in the series. Feels like 3, with another, related series set in Michigan perking in the back of my mind.
Kathy Miner I don't. I sit in the chair and start writing. Inspiration almost never fails to show up, but I have to start the party. As Chuck Close says, "Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work." Now, all that kind of arrogant stuff being said, I get inspired by EVERYTHING. TV commercials, a song on the radio, something overheard in the grocery store - all of it makes me think, "Hmmm, that would make a good story..." You just always need to be in that frame of mind, and inspiration shows up constantly.
Kathy Miner As cliched as it sounds, I dreamed the main character, Naomi...but not as you've all met her in this book. I dreamed a future Naomi, in such detail, I was disoriented whenever I woke up. And I asked myself, "What could have happened to this woman, that she would end up in this place?" Answering that question resulted in this book.
