Amy Pleimling Not much experience with this as I am only on my second book but I try always jot down my thoughts and as long as I do that I feel okay to walk away when nothing is coming.
Amy Pleimling Reading my book to kids and talking about what they learned with them. I read my book at an elementary school - all those kids wrote me thank you cards. They had drawn pictures and made comments on what they learned. Reading the cards brought tears to my eyes.... that day was the best feeling (as an author) I have had so far for sure.
Amy Pleimling I don't think I am in a position to give advice - still aspiring myself!
Amy Pleimling My second book - about eating a rainbow!
Amy Pleimling My passion thus far with writing comes from my experience as a dietitian and a mother. Part of my job is to educate adults on how to change their diet to improve their health - maybe they have diabetes or heart disease. But much of the damage has been done - and the goal is to improve health through diet changes on the back side. Habits have been formed and they are very hard to change. Prevention is much more forward thinking and I believe it should be a huge focus in health care. I believe teaching kids about healthy habits is the best place to start in the effort of prevention. My inspiration comes from seeing first hand that teaching kids in a fun way about nutrition works - but it needs to be done more.
Amy Pleimling I have always loved teaching kids and was hoping I could tie that into my field (nutrition) eventually. I was working as a dietitian at a supermarket and started a series of kids cooking classes. It seemed to be such a positive and impactful way to get kids to try healthy foods - but of course you do get some funny faces and some kids saying "gross!" (or the like). "Don't yuck someone's yum" was a statement I had heard before and had seen other dietitian's use and so at the beginning of each class, while discussing our plan, this became a motto. Kids grabbed onto it and passed the message along to their family and friends so rapidly - I was amazed. I new I had to use it somewhere else and thus the idea for the book.
