Ideas spring up from conversations I overhear in diners, or things in the news. I'm reading Dickens' Dictionary of London 1888 right now, and you wouldn't believe the stuff that's in there. It's given me several ideas that are sort of backed up in the runway in my mind, for future use.

Read. I taught myself to read when I was three, and I've been reading obsessively ever since. M.R. James, Shirley Jackson, Dan Simmons, Donna Tartt and Stephen King are high up in my pantheon of gods.

I put the laptop down and go away and do something else for awhile. Sometimes I work on another story, when the one I'm working on has me stymied. Eventually, the characters start talking to me again, and I get back on it.

The idea for Rosina and the Travel Agency has been kicking around in my head for years, ever since I was in high school and read Jack Finney's wonderful book, Time and Again.
