How do you deal with writer’s block?
Sandra Merville Hart I usually write inspirational historical romances. When I get writer's block, I return to my research. Doing additional research sparks more ideas because I try to immerse myself in the time period. If I can visualize what the characters experienced, it's easier to write it.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
Sandra Merville Hart I'm doing what I love to do. Whenever I'm away and can't write for longer than a few days, I can't wait to get back to it. It feeds my spirit.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Sandra Merville Hart It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance to become a better writer. Take writing classes, correspondence courses, and attend writer conferences to learn the craft. Then write the stories that live in your imagination. The first few attempts may not be very good, but keep practicing. Apply all you've learned thus far in everything you write.
It's like the basketball player who continually practices tossing hoops. Once he masters the shot from one angle, he moves to another position and practices from there. It's a continual learning process.

How do you get inspired to write?
Sandra Merville Hart I never know in advance what will inspire a story idea, but I've found inspiration in odd places like shopping centers, historic places, restaurants, newspaper articles, and casual conversations. I'm inspired by people.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Sandra Merville Hart While researching for another Civil War novel, I read several accounts and diaries of soldiers from both sides. Some of them mentioned that local residents hid in caves when armies occupied the area. They mentioned that the women had made these temporary hiding places cozy.
