Josette Reuel Anything can inspire a new story idea, from a comment made by a friend to an image seen online. All it takes is something that stirs an emotional response to get me thinking about the possibilities.
Josette Reuel Speak to published authors (mass market or Indie). Authors much like readers love to talk books. Most are more than willing to give you a tidbit or two about their own processes and the lessons they've learned. Not everyone likes research, I don't, but you need to sit down and do a bit. One big decision to make is whether to self-publish or look for a publisher (and what level of publisher a small house or large). Make the decisions that are best for you and stick to them. One big thing to remember is to have fun with it. Writing is a creative endeavor and cannot be forced.
Josette Reuel I love to create. The process of working out the details of the characters and piecing together their lives for a story is a real rush for me. But, I think the best part of writing is when you type that last word and are able to share your "baby" with friends. When they come back with true praise... there's nothing better than that feeling.
Josette Reuel My first published book is "Finding the Dragon," which is part of the Dásreach Council series. The idea for the series started a couple years back when I met a group of women on Facebook and we started our own private book club. Then, a while ago their was a chain story post going around and several of us participated. The more I read and thought about it, the more I thought about how it could be a story and how all of the gals in the group could participate and help to build the characters and base storyline. It was a way to have fun and include everyone in an activity together since we live all over the US and Europe. Granted the final outcome of this project, Finding the Dragon, doesn't resemble those early thoughts in the posts, but it has been an amazing journey with the Book Worms ;)
Josette Reuel I was given some really good advice once, "Write anything. Even if it's a letter." So, that's what I do. If I'm stuck on the scene I'm writing I'll write a different scene or I'll go on social media and post and comment with friends and fans. Before long the piece I needed will pop in my head and I can continue.
