For me, that is a two part answer. First, I am a fine arts artist as well as a comic book artist... so the influences are different in each genre of art, but they do tend to overlap. Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Salvador Dali are my biggest contributors to my growth in the fine arts arena.
Their paintings and storytelling have inspired me for years. In fact, Dali was a big fan of comic books and predicted that they would received the celebrity status that they have now.
In the comic book world, I have Steve Ditko, creator of Spiderman
and Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts, to thank for my
early experience in storytelling, the bread and butter of being a
good artist, period. Next, up is Jack " King" Kirby noted for his
dynamic figures and in your face comic book action.
I do have other influences, but these are the main ones... and I am
still in admiration of them even unto this day. I can see why they
made comics so much fun back then.
Every artist has to love what he does and it shows in their work...
and hopefully people will see that spark in my own artistry as well.

My recent book is a long time coming. Its an artbook called
Aura- The art of Winston Blakely. My writing partner Jemir
Johnson planted the seed of that idea a while ago. Its
interesting that while doing an interview for Black Science
Fiction Society.com that it started to become an reality.
And soon in October... you can see Aura -the art of Winston
Blakely. I have included many images from popular genres
that I have always admired. Such as Pulp, Sci Fi, Fantasy
Horror, Humor, Fine Arts and the newly christened
entry of Sword and Soul. To be it is a fun book for all.

Since I am a artist/writer, it is the visuals that come to me first. But, I do hear the voice of the characters telling me what they would do and what they won't do. Amazing how your imagination can make the world and
heroes you develop become real and in many ways, your friend.

There will always be an element of style that you will find before
you develop your own writing niche. Embrace it and your own
skills will grow.

I have always consider writing, painting with words, this thought
may stem from the fact that I am also an artist as well.

I have been blessed to have an writing partner named Jemir
Johnson. It does help to bounce ideas or brainstorm scenarios
with someone who knows the elements of the genre you are
looking for.
