Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
Steven John I wish I could tell you... I came up with an isolated scene and then worked backward, figuring out what might have led to that incident out on that dark road, and what might happen in its wake.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
Steven John Ideally with a mountain - the relatively small but lovely Mt. Thom near my house helps. Ultimately, just go do something else for a while, the book will wait for you.

What are you currently working on?
Steven John Mostly being a dad. And writing for various websites. And slooooowly editing the two other novels I have finished when I catch a few seconds here and there.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
Steven John Just start writing. And read. Read so goddamn much. Read Tolstoy and Vonnegut and The New Yorker and Twain and just read.
