I was already thinking of writing a Sherlock Holmes novel but it wasn't until I watched From Hell that I thought of a story with Jack the Ripper. I developed the plot before reading other works of a similar nature to ensure that my story was entirely my own.

You can't wait around for inspiration. You have to treat writing like a normal job and write constantly. Usually it is when carrying out an entirely different task that "inspiration" will hit.
