This probably sounds silly but it's important to get up and move. Going for a walk helps. I wrote a large part of my current project in small notebooks I could slip in my pocket and carry as I was walking.

The idea for the book that I am presently working on came from the fact that my father, the historian Robert Blake, had been a PoW in Italy during the Second World War and escaped. The story involved an escape across the mountains and an encounter with wolves which I found absolutely thrilling as a child! The only part of his memoirs he completed before he died was the part that covered his war time experiences so my novel Far Away is based partly on these memoirs.
