I just got your question from GR today (1/10/2022).
I have not read Steele's book, but it sounds good.
I think it helps to see that Homage to Catalonia is part of a trilogy, to go along with 1984 and Animal Farm. Catalonia gives the background that helps us understand these other two books better.

Hi Mark:
Just got a notice of your question via email.
Orwell is back in the news, with some invoking him in a way that's not accurate....

Hello Michael and Celia,
I hope you're both doing well.
My name is T.L. Payne, and I’m involved with a reader community centered around Boxall’s 1001 Bo Hello Michael and Celia,
I hope you're both doing well.
My name is T.L. Payne, and I’m involved with a reader community centered around Boxall’s 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, where readers come together to discover, discuss, and share their thoughts on books. The community is active on Goodreads and includes thousands of members.
We're currently putting together our 2026 Reading Challenge (September–December Edition) and are looking at books that could encourage meaningful discussion and reader participation throughout the event.
I recently came across KidWare: The Parent's Guide to Software for Children, and what caught my attention was its practical approach to helping parents understand the growing world of children's software. Covering areas such as reading, mathematics, art, science, history, games, simulations, and word processing, the book offers a broad look at how technology was being introduced into children's learning and recreation.
What I found particularly interesting is the perspective it provides on children's technology from the 1990s. While the specific software landscape has obviously changed considerably since its publication, that historical perspective could make the book especially interesting for readers to revisit and discuss particularly around how expectations of educational technology, parenting, and children's digital experiences have evolved over time.
We'd love to invite KidWare: The Parent's Guide to Software for Children to be considered for the Reading Challenge.
Once you confirm that you're interested in participating, we will arrange for up to five interested readers to receive the book and read it independently. Those readers can then choose to share their honest thoughts or review the book based on their genuine reading experience.
We believe meaningful reader participation is more valuable than simply placing a book on a reading list. The aim is to give readers an opportunity to actually discover the work, discuss it, and decide for themselves what they think of it.
If this sounds interesting, simply reply “YES,” and I'll send over the full details of how the challenge works and what participation involves. There's absolutely no obligation.
If now isn't the right time, no worries at all. I truly appreciate you taking the time to read my message.
Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Warm regards,
T.L. Payne
