I have to say in the world of children's books, Piggie and Gerald (Mo Willems) is my my favorite couple. They are silly and funny and loving. They really try to understand and challenge each other. The remind me to be compassionate and playful at the same time and to love unconditionally.

I do what I call "marinating". I walk away from my writing for a little bit and do something else. Sometimes I have to put something away for a good amount of time (weeks or months) before I know what's supposed to happen next. Sometimes I work on something else and when I come back to the original piece, it's much more clear what's supposed to happen with it. If I have a deadline and have to get the work done "now", I take a shower. I always get my best "aha" moments in the shower.

Do one thing everyday to move closer to your goal. Even if you can only find five minutes of time to outline something, do it---watch a youtube tutorial, read an inspiring article, ask another peer a question. These things will all set you up with the tools you will need along the way. Just keep going.

Our second title is coming out this Spring. It's a book called "And So Much More" and it reminds kids that they are more than "just cute"--they are imaginative, loving powerful beings. It's set in a city and includes a lot of street art and murals--the sketches so far are really vibrant and inspiring. What I love most about it is that it honors every type of person and family you can imagine--everyone is included in this book.

I'm constantly inspired to write by thinking about what is going on around me. I'm always observing people and life's quirks. I'm always open to new ways to communicate and encourage people by the metaphors that just show up in my everyday life.

The main idea for "Firenze's Light" was sparked one day when I was lighting a candle. I lit a votive and dropped it into a candle holder that was made of mosaic glass. The light from the candle made the most beautiful patterns when I put it inside the glass and I thought how fun it would be to translate that into a book about bugs and fireflies and the beauty personal expression brings.
