Ernest Hemmingway. He was able to paint portraits with his words, make his characters fly, draw his plot lines together make me weep and rejoice. I first read The Old Man and the Sea when I was ten. still think it is the finest book ever written.

Juan El Griego- a mémoire and novel of the Spanish civil War 1936-1939. My father died while travelling to Africa with me. He left me a manuscript about his life called "My visit to the Planet Earth." Ity details his war in spain against Franco and his time in the concentration camp of San Pedros. Since Dad has been dead a long time now, I thought it fitting that we should write this one together.

I have a love-love relationship with Africa. The nidus for Tears on the Equator came from Harvey Arden my editor at National Geographic and Peter Gzowski, the eminence Grise of Canadian broadcasting who published a series of my letters in his first book, "The Morningside Papers."
