My grandfather, whose picture appears on the cover of "The Horse Lawyer and Other Poems", had aspirations of being a lawyer but was his father's youngest son. As often happened with youngest sons in that day, he found himself staying at home and running the farm. He spent his entire 88 years on the same farm. Read the book to see how he made the very best of it.
It started out as one poem but, as I wrote, I realized that his story mirrored the experience of so many others of both his and succeeding generations - farmers who dealt with the dust bowl, the Great Depression, world wars abroad and numerous other challenges. From there, the one poem evolved into an entire collection of poems.

The same advice I have been given by a friend who is a published author and semi-retired professor at my alma mater, the University of Northern Iowa. "Enjoy your writing - no need to worry about who is reading it."

I have two projects in various stages. The first is a companion piece to "The Horse Lawyer and Other Poems" entitled "Tractor Bones and Rusted Trucks" that will include both poems and essays. The other is a Civil War period novel called "Henry's Pride". I need to finish the final chapter but have had that on the back burner while I work on marketing "Horse Lawyer."

I have always wanted to write, even when I would write little stories as a kid. Things have a habit of getting in the way. I never really figured to make a living doing it. Other obligations such as raising our family and my career as a certified public accountant took precedence. Now that I am retired, I finally have the time to pursue my writing and give it some real attention.

Many of my best ideas come to me when I am doing other tasks such as working in the yard mowing, raking leaves, etc. If I feel I am "blocking", I quit trying for a while and do something entirely different. I do yard work, work on something in my wood shop or paint watercolors - anything relaxing that is a change. Try it - it works.
