I put it aside and do something different for a while. Just like you remember where you put your keys when you aren't looking for them, I find I often an work my way out of a rut when I stop trying so hard to come up with the right words.

I find writing allows me to express myself in a way that talking in front of people doesn't. Plus, writing is a skill everyone "wishes they could do." A lot of people think they're writers, and a lot of people will admire you for your ability to successfully and coherently put words on paper.

Obviously, to be a writer you need to write. And read. Lots of reading. But more than that, be tuned into the world around you. A lot of inspiration, and motivation, can be found by observing the people you meet in your life (or watch them as they go about their own lives) and the experiences you have.

I'm working on selling my book currently :) But I also am building my blog, Blondie Marie (www.blondiemarie.com) and spending time with my family (I have a 6-month-old son). Recently I started going back through uncompleted stories I had written, to see if there was a way I could finish/start over and write those out. I'm working through a short screenplay I wrote back in college, to see if I can turn it into a novel. It kind of scares me.

I get inspired by what I observe. Sometimes it's from television, movies or music -- trying to complete a story that the tv show or movie didn't go far enough into, or finding the story within a song I listen to. Other times it's from my community and job. I'm a journalist, so I have a pretty good idea of what the issues are in my community. I also write the obituaries, and it's sometimes interesting to imagine the life of someone as you're reading their obit.

I was watching the music video for Train's "Marry Me," which I had heard on the radio several times, and I remember thinking there was more to the story than the music video suggested. So I started writing the story. That led to listening to the rest of the Save Me, San Francisco album for more ideas, then opening it up to the rest of Train's discography.
