When I was a senior in high school my best friend and I decided to observe Halloween one more time before joining the Navy. We wanted to walk down the darkest alleys in town and scare people. Instead we met a man in a black cloak. We called to him but he disappeared behind an old shed in the alley. We both ran to catch him but he disappeared. We searched diligently. Since then we have often joked about it. How did he avoid us as we both ran around the shed from opposite directions and met each other instead of the spook. As a writer I think I could have fun with that.

I just completed a 3.5 year project called Scuba, which is an adventure novel tracing the growth of scuba as a sport in the U.S. and in other oceans of the world. And of course, there's a love story. Now I'm writing a war story about sailors in Vietnam, and didn't think I'd be having this much fun.
