Wow ~ lately I don't feel like an expert. At all. In fact, I blithely wrote the first several pages of a short story centered around Ellison and a group of her friends who'd gathered to watch a basketball game on a weeknight. Whoops! Not in the 70s. Sports programming was relegated to weekends unless it was the World Series, etc...
When I started writing the Country Club Murders I researched a lot. I've been doing this long enough that I don't need to spend days in that rabbit hole. I know the songs, the TV shows, the books, and the national players.
I remember the attitudes toward women, and sex, and gender roles. I remember Tab with lime and phone cords stretched beyond their limits. I remember Rosie and her roll of Bounty and Watergate hearings.
If I'm feeling rusty I watch CNN's excellent series on the 70s or I pick up a book written in the era, or I turn on MeTV and watch the Rockford Files or Columbo.
