Carol Grace Stratton Several years ago I met a woman who grew up in small town in Pennsylvania. She, a woman in her late fifties, had a very sweet and kind disposition. To look at her with her round, smiley face, wire-rimmed glasses and soft spoken voice, one would never guess that only a few years earlier she had worked for the CIA as a spy in the Middle East. Only after getting to know her better did I believe her outrageous and fascinating yarns.

You never know what stories people have hiding inside of them! My friend may possibly show up as a character in one of my future novels!
Carol Grace Stratton I spent two years in an autistic classroom and knew I had to write about the kids. They are unique but misunderstood as are their overworked, underappreciated parents. I dedicated "Lake Surrender" to a family who succeeded raising four children, the last one with autism that has disrupted their lives. I take my hat off to them!

Secondly, I have a warm spot for Christian camps. My life changed at one of them. God can get ahold of a person when they step out of their daily routine and into a peaceful setting like Lake Surrender.
Carol Grace Stratton Music inspires me as well as reading a well written book. Usually God puts a subject on my heart that stirs some passion in me and I feel compelled to share it in a blog or story. Writers have a strong drive to communicate.
Carol Grace Stratton I wanted to see how readers responded to Lake Surrender and I have been encouraged to continue on with the small northern lake town. Currently I am working on "A Lake Surrender Christmas" which will have some of the characters in the book as well as some new ones added. Hint: part of the story will take place in a small newspaper office. Oh the drama of a newsroom, even a tiny one!
Carol Grace Stratton Write for yourself. Write like no one else will ever read your work. Then when you work up your courage, share your writing with a trusted friend. As you develop your confidence, strike out and offer your writings for free. Newsletters, free giveaway women's magazines and various non-profit organization are always looking for material.

Finally, find other writers. We need each other; writing is difficult, lonely, exhausting, frustrating and full of self-doubt. When you network and develop friends, it will keep you on the road to publication.
Carol Grace Stratton I love being able to encourage people through words, either through my life stories or through a made up person in my novel. To feel I can reach someone with truth through the indirect route of a story and make the reader think and empathize ... well, there's nothing like it.
Carol Grace Stratton If I get stuck I often push myself away from my computer and do something physical like walking. Often I can figure out a problem in a story if I'm Not
writing and dwelling on my block.
