Tony Hunter The idea for Tanks Do Not Make Good Pets came from two main sources:
* I have a childhood friend who is now a farmer in a rural area and a huge military history fan. He is always telling me how he wishes he had a Tank he could play with on the farm (boys never truly grow up).
* My young son is always seeing new pets and asking if he can have one. He comes up with some pretty fantastic ideas for pets from watching TV/movies/reading books.
It wasn't much of a stretch for me to put the two ideas together and think about the adventures and chaos that would ensue!
Tony Hunter I think about the things I liked or thought was cool when I was a kid. I watch my young son and see what kind of things he is attracted to and likes in books we read to him and try an incorporate those into my books.

Most of all, I am inspired to write books that my son would enjoy but that are not available. The thought of filling this niche for him and other families who are looking for similar products gives me satisfaction that I am doing something worthwhile. Hearing a kid say "wow, this is really cool!" while looking at one of my books is the best thing in the world!
Tony Hunter Preparing for events/shows/festivals in my local area to promote my books and increase my sales.
I am also trying to teach myself marketing and SEO techniques to reach a wider customer base.
Tony Hunter Don't be afraid to start. Once you have, don't let yourself stop.
Set yourself lofty daily goals each morning and don't quit until they are completed.
Tony Hunter I am able to work hours that are more suitable for family life. I am able to take my child to school, appointments, sport and spend far more time with my family than I ever could in a 'regular' job.
Tony Hunter I always have more ideas and projects to work on than I have time in the day. If I find that I am spinning my wheels trying to finish a certain rhyme or line, I'll often move over to working on an illustration or work on marketing until I'm ready to go back and finish.
