I'd travel to the old forest at the edge of Buckland and seek out Tom Bombadil. He is a fascinating character, filled with ancient magic and (almost) impervious to the evil of Mordor, although in the end he too would fall to the Lord of the Rings. I'd love to share a song with him, and meet his wife, the River-Daughter.

I've just published my first novel, Small Fish Big Fish - which for want of a better description is literary fiction - and a collection of short stories called Dark Fantasy. My next book that I'm aiming to release in Feb/March 2015 will be a science fiction novel for young adults. More on that later!

Join a good professional writing class in your local neighborhood. Get to meet others with the same aspirations as yourself, and if it's not already part of the curriculum, lobby for work-shopping of each others writing to be included. This is one of the quickest and most satisfying ways to improve your techniques and overall skill levels.

Having readers is number 1. Number 2 is the creative outlet writing provides. Sometimes when you write, the words flow, and when you read them later they can knock your socks off with the simplicity and beauty of the thought. It is really nice when someone else points out something that really works, and I haven't noticed it before!

This only happens to me very occasionally, I'm pleased to say. I'd like to be able to share some sure-fire meditation mantra with you, but I don't have any. Basically, I just plow through. I write anything that comes into my head (most times it's rubbish) and eventually I'll get an idea.
