Christopher J.T. Lewis A few years ago I was working on a biography of Galileo. For better or worse, a couple of other excellent scholars had already had the same idea, so I set my project aside. But I had always been especially intrigued by Galileo's relatively ill-documented youth, and I was familiar with the story of Duke Francesco de' Medici and the beautiful Bianca Cappello. So one day, as I was walking along the promenade at Southwold, I thought: maybe combine those two stories, maybe make Galileo into some sort private dick, solving crimes . . . Surely it must be easier just to make things up, and not have to check footnotes? Little did I know.
