Tom Waters The initial inspiration from Travesty came from working on, editing and publishing my friend Mark McElligott's book Random Thoughts From A Broken Mind. His essays reminded me that I should get back to basics and that it wasn't necessary to follow a thought or idea for 8 or 10 pages. I wanted to return to shorter, punchier material that landed better in a live book reading scenario.
Tom Waters Lately it's been a killer opening line or a really funny anecdote that I can build out from. Writing humor has become anatomical for me as opposed to my previous method of riding out the steam from the initial inspiration for a rant.

Tom Waters I have one shelf on my bookshelves that I earmark for my books and my friend's books. That shelf is almost full. In spite of all of my accomplishments, that shelf means more to me than almost anything.
Tom Waters I 'write out the bones'. There is such a thing as writer's block, but the best thing for me is to write through it. Typically, though, it's a sign that I need to try something new with my writing or challenge myself a bit more.
