Ann Roth Cool question. We always have secrets, and that has always intrigued me. Many of my novels explore the repercussions hiding things. In Mr. May, book #5 in my Heroes of Rogue Valley: Calendar Guys, out May 1, I explore how secrets can hurt those you love. Thanks for asking!
Ann Roth I had the idea of firefighters and the Rogue Valley location. One day when a writer friend and I were chatting about the series, she suggested a firefighter calendar. From there, I decided that each hero in each book will be one of the 12 men featured on the calendar. Just think, 12 stories with 12 firefighter heroes and the lucky women they fall in love with!
Ann Roth Writing is my passion. It is also my career, and I whether or not I feel inspired or in the mood to write, I do it anyway. But really? As I write and get into the story, I can't help but get inspired. I also can't wait to find out what happens next. Because even though the books are loosely plotted before I ever begin writing, I know that lots of unplanned, cool stuff is going to happen as the characters travel the challenging path to the happily ever after.
Ann Roth I am writing a romance series featuring firefighters that takes place in a fictitious town in the Rogue Valley. This is a self-published series and I'll be sharing the first book, Mr. January, within a few days. I'm having a ball with it! My only regret is that I don't write faster.
Ann Roth Never, never, never give up! Write every day, even if you only manage to write a paragraph. If someone you trust gives you feedback about your work that you don't like, keep an open mind. Listen to them and think about what they said. Then do what you think works best for you and your story.
Ann Roth Exploring issues and learning new things. Letting the characters teach me things I never imagined they knew. I think that deep down, all writers are controllers, and what better place to have that control than in a world I have created? Even if the characters do often take charge, I have the ultimate say! (Evil laugh...)
Ann Roth I have learned that sooner or later, I WILL find the answer to whatever issue holds me back. If I hit an impasse, I take time away from the book and go do something that has nothing to do with writing for a little while or even several hours. Meanwhile, my subconscious is busy mulling things around. This leads to lots of thinking and mad scribbling on a college-rule notebook that I either use or discard. Another trick I use is to write and keep writing, deleting and saving and moving and so on until I write through the problem.
