Jemiah Jefferson What usefulness or purpose can be found for a person lacking in all of society's standard metrics for a woman - not pretty, thin, stylish, moneyed, connected, or lovable? How much can be accomplished by someone effectively invisible and disposable?
Jemiah Jefferson I thought everything was going to be OK. I was wrong.
Jemiah Jefferson I laughed when I saw this, because I haven't had a concept of a "summer reading list" since I was probably in elementary school... Instead my life just contains a continual onslaught of books I plow through. But in the next couple of months, I hope to re-read William Gibson's "The Peripheral", get more Daphne DuMaurier stories under my belt, finally get to the most recent Jonathan Lethem book before he puts out another one, continue with Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower series, read Carrie Fisher's final volume, and catch a few laughs with Caitlin Moran's "How to be a Woman", which has been on my shelf for six years without me having started it yet. I have got to get a handle on my habit of getting books from the library and start reading the books I already own...
Jemiah Jefferson I guess my most recent book, as it can be considered to the general public, is "Mixtape for the Apocalypse", except that I wrote it before any of the others save for "Voice of the Blood". Mixtape was inspired by essentially living through all of the experiences described in the book, but in less cartoonishly dramatic circumstances. But the going crazy part, yeah, that was all me.
Jemiah Jefferson Canonical - I think it's Han Solo and Leia Organa. It is a relationship in which both participants grow and thrive without ever sacrificing who they are, their values, or their friends. Non-canonical - Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. They've been a favorite "couple" of mine since childhood, before I learned that they WEREN'T actually canonically in love, or together, or however you want to describe it. Nothing's really changed my opinion on the matter, either.
Jemiah Jefferson Really talented character actors, and really great writing that I read from others. It makes me want to participate.
Jemiah Jefferson If at all possible, write every single day, for as much time as you have. Read everything you can get your hands on, from Shakespeare to the ingredients list on a can of Lysol, and revise what you read in your head. Be interested in what YOU are interested in - keep an open mind, but honor your own thoughts and opinions as the highest ones that exist, because, in your world, they SHOULD be. Have faith in weird things. Get plenty of sleep and stay hydrated. Write by hand sometimes, if you favor a computer; the reverse is also true - write on everything you can, from mobile phones to crayons on newsprint to alphabet stickers. Constantly and compulsively form words. Also, don't get discouraged, because this life is a hard one, and nobody will understand you - except maybe other writers, but they might not, either. Do it for you. Do it because you can't not do it. Do it even though you hate yourself for doing it. Write.
Jemiah Jefferson Being able to create, and then visit and observe, parallel realities.
Jemiah Jefferson Depends on the cause - if it's just lack of ideas, I watch something with sexy people in it. If it's lack of motivation, I drink some coffee and go for a brief walk, then sit back down and get back to it. If, like now, it's lack of energy and a lack of being able to focus on what needs my immediate attention... well, I wibble about and occasionally poke at the administrative work that's the larger part of being a writer - and usually that inspires me creatively, just as a method of avoidance of work!
Jemiah Jefferson Currently working on the conclusion of a long-form fan fiction piece, trying to begin/continue a new fan fiction series (Doctor Who this time!), conceptualizing the urban fantasy/slipstream/insanity work I've been thinking over for decades, and also conceptualizing/beginning the planning stages for the fifth vampire novel, for which I hope to create a Kickstarter campaign to give me the means to be able to write it.
