I was lucky - the character of DI Lukas Mahler arrived in my head more or less fully formed. I had an image in my head of the opening chapter, and it followed on from there!

Go and do something else for a while. Curiously, I find having a shower often helps! I think it's something to do with the sensory deprivation thing, it focuses the mind differently.
