Tom, how did you conceptualize your story? Did you start linear then break it up? Was it more stream of conscious? Or combo of both? (One thing that sticks in my mind is the image of that giant rat as representation of NY and the billboard/eyes.) Just have to say, I really enjoyed your book. Thanks for sharing your journey of healing.

Tom Hart It came out in a lot of ways how I wrote it. If something in the story led to a digression in my mind, I followed it. And the jumping back and forth in time was mostly cause each felt too intense to follow for too long.

What are you currently working on?

Tom Hart I think I am working on a book about my second daughter, Molly Rose, and having her and not having Rosalie. It's strange. Not sure yet.

Was it hard to come up with a style to draw Rosalie? Was the cartoon style you settled on something you developed for the book, or something you drew from life?

Tom Hart It was hard in that I didn't like Rosalie not being there. But drawing her was the next best thing.

I looked at old kids comics, especially like by Sheldon Mayer (Sugar and Spike) to see how cartoon kids had been done in the past. I liked the idea of just making her a simple cartoon character. I think it's a good representation of her spirit.
